Scott&Jae Gallery of Beverly Hills is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition "One and All" by the Korean-American artist Michelle Oh. Opening reception for the show will take place Saturday, October 13th, 2024 from 3 to 6 PM at our gallery on 215 S. La Cienega Blvd. Suite 210; "One and All" will be shown until November 08th, 2024.
“One and All” is Michelle Oh’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring twenty-one paintings composed in the last two years. Oh’s polychromatic and tactile works are created through a unique process known as paint-carving; after meticulously applying layers upon layers of acrylic paint onto wooden panels, she then carves intricate patterns and designs, exposing the variegated stratigraphy underneath.
In “One and All” Michelle Oh explores the compositional possibilities of paint-carving. Some of her works reside in the abstract, with expressive, almost frenetic, strokes cascading amorphously across the painted surfaces. Other works are more representational, with silhouettes of flora and fauna emerging in or from relief.
A central throughline across all of Oh’s works is a keen sense of balance. By utilizing the contrast between the carved areas and the blank raised spaces, Oh is able to contain the seemingly overwhelming flux of color, movement, and texture created by carving layers of paint and create a sense of equilibrium.
Michelle Oh (b. 1956) is a Korean-born Los Angeles based artist. She received her BFA from HongIk University in Korea. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and California.
